Maremma events "Eventi Maremma" in October are an eclectic mix of activities that range from free childrens Japanese origami and script workshops, to a costumed medieval crossbow competition, autumnal chestnut, pumpkin and grape harvest festivals, motorcycle rallys and mountain bike treks, five day gastronomic food and wine tasting by a lagoon... to a free guided tour of "little Jerusalem" - the hill top town of Pitigliano and the Etruscan Vie Cave.

Free workshops for children in the Palazzo dell'Abbondanza: on the 8 October 2010, there is a free "laboratorio di origami" - origami workshop. A Tuscany grape harvest festival in which you will find the towns cellars open each day and the residents of the three "contrade" - districts - in full medieval costume. Plus a poetry reading competition: makes a great day out for the whole family.

29th Festa della Castagna - 29th Chestnut Festival

A long weekend dedicated to the chestnut, with typical Maremman products and gastronomic food stalls. There will be a guided walk through the Riserva Naturale di Poggio all'Olmo where you can watch the ancient crafts of collection and chestnut processing. Plus shows, concerts, markets and dancing in the evenings. And the towns wine cellars are open for the event.

A medieval crossbow tournament in costume between the archers of Massa Marittima, Lucca and San Marino, with a flag throwing display and parade to the cathedral.

PITIGLIANO
Giornata Touring 10 - 10 - 10

As part of the Touring Club Italiano's October initiative to offer free guided tours to eighty-seven small places in Italy that hold the "Bandiera arancione" (the award of an orange flag for places of particular historical, cultural and environmental value that offer visitors a warm welcome) , there will be a free guided tour of Pitigliano.

The tour will visit the old town, the Jewish Quarter with the synagogue and the Etruscan Vie Cave carved up to twenty metres deep in the local tufo rock.

Gustatus - The sense of taste. Aromas and flavours of the rural tradition and lagoon

2010 sees the third "Gustatus" celebrating the culture and gastronomy of life around Orbetello lagoon. The whole of the town and many visitors fill the streets with wine glasses in hand to taste Maremma's wines from one vineyard to the next and the free tit-bits of typical local foods... to visit the fish market and "cioccolateria" (artisan chocolatiers), artists market, a seventeenth century market with another chocolate maker typical of those that would have supplied the Medici family. Plus music and shows.
