The Best Restaurants
Massa Marittima

There is a good choice of restaurants Massa Marittima, many situated in the heart of this spectacular medieval town. At the moment, however, this is your insider guide to just one!

Following a recommendation from another local Maremman and our first meal there, we have never felt the need to try others. Not very adventurous, perhaps, but testimony nonetheless to the quality of the food and friendly ambience of the place.

It is also situated in a great spot in Piazza Garibaldi with a stunning duomo (cathedral) as a backdrop. From an outdoor table you can sit and watch local italian life... the many tourists in the summer... drink a glass of wine or beer with friends... and watch the evening sun turn the scene hues of pink.

I will update the page when we have eaten elsewhere in the town! But this, for the time being anyway, is our favourite restaurant in Massa Marittima.

I Tre Archi
Birreria Pizzeria Spaghetteria

The young proprietor chef at Tre Archi provides a good selection of meat and fish first and second courses, and a varying "Piatti di Giorno" (plate of the day) menu.

Restaurants Massa Marittima: Ristorante I Tre Archi
His father is in charge of making the pizzas, which have a very light thick base and are excellent.

There are many to chose from, but if you don't find exactly the combination of flavours you are looking for, they will happily oblige.

Pizza prices start at Euros 6,50.

The "primi piatti" pasta courses are priced from Euros 6,50 to Euros 8,00.

They also serve fresh pasta dishes. Try the penne pasta with salmon and dill, or the parpadelle pasta with cinghiale (wild boar).

Of the "dolce" (deserts), the home-made tiramisu or the creme di marscapone, which is as light as a feather, are our favourites.

Both the house red and white wines are very good, with the still white being a lovely dry and crisp wine.

The whole ambience and service at I Tre Archi is very friendly and efficient.

There is no cover charge.

In the summer months this restaurant is full to the brim for both lunch and dinner, so to save yourself a long wait reserve a table in advance - "fare una prenotazione". In the summer evenings there is often a queue of people waiting for a table.

AN UPDATE

In March 2009, the ownership of Tre Archi changed and I have not had the opportunity to eat there since.

The proprietor now runs the new Bar Michelangelo and Era Ora Champagne Bar located a short distance north from the Piazza Garibaldi (adjacent to Bar Centrale - my favourite place for gelato "artiginale" in Massa Marittima). He has created an elegant setting for eating out and drinking evening cocktails.
