Maremma sagre in June: wine food and festivals in undiscovered Tuscany and Lazio. A wonderful opportunity to experience traditional home-cooked Italian food and locally produced wines with the community of a town, together with many of the visitors that come from much further afield to attend these annual events and spend the day with friends.

At this month's food and wine festivals you can choose from the traditional tortella pasta, fried fish, snails, buffalo, wild fruits, themed costume dinners, beer... all mixed with music, sports, dancing, shows and markets! Have fun!

42nd Sagra della Lumaca - Festival of the snail

A gastronomic event dedicated to the snail (not one of my personal favourite foods, but each to their own!) with music and dancing in the town's piazza (square).

ROSELLE (Grosseto)
32nd Sagra del Tortello Maremmano - Festival of the Maremma Tortello pasta

At this sagra you will find food stalls, sport events and evening dancing.

TALAMONE (Grosseto)
Nonsolomare 2010 - this literally meams "not just the sea"

Not a sagra, but a mix of gourmet food, sports events, music and themed markets. The food stands are open from 17:00 to 23:00.

CASTIGLIONCELLO (Livorno)
39th Festa del Pesce - Fish festival

On the Saturday the markets and crafts in the town square start from 15:00, with the fried food stands opening at 19:00. On the Sunday the market is open from 09:00 to 24:00, with the food stands from 12:00 noon. One of the attractions is a huge frying pan on the seafront in which literally tonnes of fish are cooked! - 45 tonnes of fish were consumed at the event in 2009. It is a very popular annual event attracting around 30,000 people. Closing fireworks along the coast at 23:00 hours.

Civitella in Musica 2010

A music and food event for lovers of good cooking (like your grandmother used to cook), dancing and music. Held at the town's sports ground.

Campagna Fritta - Fried food of the season

A gastronomic shoe in the pIazza sel Plebiscito and radiating streets. The stands open at 18.30 with local produce and the seasonal fried foods begin at 19.30. Closes at 23.30.

Festa Toscana del cibo e delle birre artigianale - A Tuscan festival of food and artisan beer

"Boccali sotto i tigli" - A beer and music festival

Well, this one isn't a sagra, but if you fancy a night out with the locals and a piano bar in one of Maremma's metalliferous hill towns, then this might be just the thing. Entrance is free.

Sagra del Tortello - Festival of the tortello pasta

At this sagra you will be able to taste "tortelli maremmani" - the speciality of Maremma containing ricotta cheese and spinach - "funghi porcini" (porcini mushrooms) and other local speciality dishes.

In Punta di Rebbi 2010 - La Cena della Trebbiatura - The dinner of the Threshers

A dinner of typical dishes from the time of harvesting by hand, such as "frittata" (omelette) with tomato, tagliolini pasta with chickpeas and tagliatelle pasta with meat "ragu" sauce. With themed costumes and music.

16th Sagra degli strozzapreti - Festival of wild fruits

A classic Maremma culinary festival from Thursday to Sunday, with shows, music, food stalls, painting and artisan exhibitions, evening dancing, and "dolce" dessert and sweet stands... mmm!
