Sagre in September in Maremma: the richest month for Tuscany festivals of food and wine. Visit a Tuscany grape harvest festival and taste wonderful wines in a cellar deep beneath a medieval hill town. September is also one of my favourite months in Maremma and one of the very best times to visit Italy.

PAGANICO
XXXIV Sagra della Granocchia - Festival of the Frog

An end of Summer and unusual food festival in Maremma for it is dedicated to the frog (although you can by ready prepared frogs in the COOP supermarket - not my taste I have to add - this sagra is the only one in Maremma that I know of that serves frog speciality dishes). On the last day there is a "palio" - the Palio della Granocchia - a race through the principle street of the town with wooden wheelbarrows and Maremmane frogs!

PITIGLIANO
Settembre di Vino - September of Wine

Music, dinner and wine and local food tasting, with a special opportunity to visit the old cellars carved into the tufo rock. Walks also through the incredible "Vie Cave": many kilometre long and up to twenty-five metres deep passageways carved through the tufo rock connecting Pitigliano with neighbouring Sovana and Sorano.

At this sagra you will find the Porcini mushroom cooked in every possible sauce! with gastronomic food stalls (open for lunch on Sunday as well), shows, dancing and live music.

Festa Poderana - Poderana Festival

A town festival over a long weekend with many typical local dishes and dancing. The food stalls are open on the Friday evening, and lunchtime and evenings on the Saturday and Sunday.
