Maremma Sagre in November
Wine and Food Festivals
Sagre in November and other traditional town and village events during this month in Maremma are dominated by the autumnal produce of the densely wooded Maremman hills, the celebration of the olive harvest and the production of extra virgin olive oil.
The weather at this time of year means that there are few "sagre" in the sense of the seated outdoor eating venues held during the summer months. Instead, there are many gastronomic "feste" (festivities) held in a towns main "piazza" (square) and streets, with the sagra itself (if there is one) held indoors in a local restaurant. The whole town bustles with its families and those from the surrounding villages and hamlets... a great Italian social event.
Typical local Maremman food is sold and there is often a mixture of markets, street artists and music, and wine tasting. In many places the towns "cantines" (cellars) are opened, enabling you to visit otherwise unseen centuries old parts of a town.
TIP: Don't miss the opportunity to visit a towns cellars if you can: some "cantines" have ceilings more than 15 metres high underneath the medieval "palazzi" (houses and apartments) above, and are often reached by winding steep paths that plumet down... A unique experience well worth undertaking. Plus, more often than not you will be offered of a small tasting of the "cantina" owners wine!
Additionally, the restaurants in the town will often open their doors during the "festa" with a menu adapted to the event.
Listed below, in date order, are the wine and food festivals and Sagre in November throughout northern Maremma Livornese, central Maremma Grossetana, and southern Maremma Laziale.
